What does it say about a country to celebrate the actions of someone like Columbus?

Personally I don't think that Christopher Columbus should have a holiday for any reason. In all honesty what did he do? Really think about it, he came to a place where people already lived and claimed it as his own. How can we as a people to this day accept that, or celebrate him as much to give him a holiday. America is known around the world as "the land of the free," or "the land of opportunity." Someone please tell me what land  was "free" to the Native Americans? What opportunities did they receive?  Clearly he wasn't the brightest crayon in the box, coming to the "New World" and calling the Natives Indian because he believed he was on India.

Throughout history there are many things that America has swept under the rug and hoped no one will get a broom.History books hardly ever tell the truth or the whole truth I should say. Everything is jaded yes, but we should learn about more then "Christopher Columbus a Italian settler who discovered America and helped give us what we have to day." What about the Africans who traveled to the "New World" way before Columbus knew how to write his name? Where is their holiday, oh or is it that not worthy? There is no story in the history book of the Natives who ACTUALLY discoved the land we can America, just that they WERE here. Millions of Natives are dead because of him. Can you celebrate that?

I feel that "Columbus Day" should be changed to celebrate the Native Americans who lost their lives trying to protect THEIR land.
